Who Benefits From The University of California's Biofuel Research

The Power of Big Finance at UC Berkeley
by Miguel A Altieri and Eric Holt-Gimenez

With royal fanfare, British Petroleum just donated big monies in research funds for UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Illinois to develop new sources of energy - primarily biotechnology to produce biofuel crops. This comes on the anniversary of Berkeley's hapless research deal with seed giant Novartis ten years ago. However, at half a billion dollars, the BP grant dwarfs Novartis' investment by a factor of ten. The graphics of the announcement were unmistakable: BP's corporate logo is perfectly aligned with the flags of the Nation, the State, and the University.

Just got word from a friend that Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has been promoting building coal fired power plants.

What is being done to counter his efforts? Does anyone know? Thanks

A Sustainable Energy Plan for the U.S.

How power could come clean--in 60 years or less
by Peter Montague, Rachel's Democracy & Health News

A path-breaking new report concludes that the U.S. could develop a sustainable energy policy -- one that is both carbon-free and nuclear- free -- in 60 years or less.

The book-length study by Arjun Makhijani of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) in Takoma Park, Maryland offers a detailed plan for powering the nation's economy with zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and no nuclear power plants. The study resulted from a joint project of IEER and the Nuclear Policy Research Institute.
