Maria’s love of the natural world began as a child in the garden of her Italian immigrant grandmother. Maria’s grandmother stewarded the land with a spiritual reverence. She bought next to nothing and threw nothing away. And she’s been a constant role model for Maria in this life.
Maria’s activist journey began in 2005 while watching the film Hotel Rwanda. Jack, a character played by Joaquin Phoenix, was talking about Americans watching genocide on the TV news. “I think that when people turn on their TVs and see this footage, they’ll say, “Oh my God, that’s horrible,” and then they’ll go back to eating their dinners.” Maria made a commitment at that moment if the opportunity to make a difference presented itself, she wouldn’t turn away, and she’s been very busy ever since.
Maria feels very blessed for all the amazing people people she meets in her activist life and in the Bioneers community. We are more powerful than we realize. And through our solidarity and compassion we can heal ourselves and heal our planet.
