For 25 years the Bioneers conference has evolved as a hub for innovative leaders who gather across disciplines and sectors with practical solutions for the world’s most pressing human and ecological challenges. Over 3000 people attend the headwaters conference in San Rafael, CA each October. Thousands more participate in local self-organized conferences nationwide.
Within the annual conference, Everywoman’s Leadership (EL) highlights the ascendancy of women’s leadership and advances a framework that spans gender, racial justice and the environment by featuring programming that focuses on the diverse landscape of women’s leadership and on priority questions and concerns for women.
EL programming at the Bioneers Conference is created with the intention of reaching wider audiences throughout the year via web casts, satellite conferences, our award-winning radio series Revolution from the Heart of Nature and through the production and distribution of The Women’s Leadership Collections of both audio and video recordings. To see and listen to clips visit the EWL Media page. To purchase the collections visit the Bioneers Store.
Past conferences have featured plenary talks by Gloria Steinem, Jane Goodall, Mary Gonzales, Annie Leonard, Ai-Jen Poo, Joanna Macy, Eve Ensler, Carol Jenkins, Terry Tempest Williams, Alice Walker, Rachel Naomi Remen and many more.
Featured presentations have included No Women, No Democracy: Innovations in Education; and dynamic conversations such as Shifting Values: Women, Money & Power, and Women Reinventing Leadership.
Experiental Interactive Programs
EWL programs experiential and interactive programming like: Leveraging White Privilege Toward Beloved Community, Full-Spectrum & Every Woman’s Leadership, Nature as Mentor and Restoring and Honoring the Sacred Feminine and Sacred Masculine.
Following on the success of our first Feminomics Intensive we continue what may become a tradition. The Feminomics day-long intensive — Feminomics: How Women’s Leadership, A Gender Lens and Whole Systems Approaches are Informing and Reinventing Economics in Ways that Work for All—proved to be very popular. This has set the stage for continued conversation and learning in the intensive format.
Throughout the conference women convene and connect in a variety of forms in the Todos tent. We also create activities that support enduring connection and a community of leadership created by and for alumnae from our intensives.
The Essence of EWL
Our culture teaches us to value and rely upon left-brain thinking which is analytical and procedural. Growing up as products of this culture we learn to discount the inherent value of right brain thinking, which is innovative and relational.
Left-brain thinking is traditionally associated with the “masculine.” Without the balance of the human capacities of its complement — the “feminine” — the standard in terms of cultural patterns have been hierarchy, judgment and aggression. As a result most, if not all of our societal systems (educational, business, healthcare, media, economic and governance) reflect these biases. How do we shift our inherited definition and understanding of what leadership is when these biases have been reinforced over and over again?
Often women who feel called toward leadership await permission, accreditation or an assignment before they feel authorized to act.
Carl Jung and many other pioneers of the psychological landscape recognize an association with the realm of interiority with the “feminine”. The importance of strengthening women’s self- awareness and generative ability has become evident. EWL prioritizes the cultivation of each woman’s deep wisdom and sense of inner authority.
This time demands leadership skills that above all else employ relational and innovative thinking. Effective leaders need be resilient and cooperative, adept at bridging differences and forging collaborations across disciplines, generations, cultures and sectors. Women are responding to the clarion call to lead in this essential and timely work of creating webs of connection and collaboration. Bioneers is optimally and uniquely positioned to help enhance, distill and spread that learning and capacity through many communities, constituencies and regions.
When investment is made in the leadership of women and girls their entire communities and ecosystems benefit.
