Resource Renewal Institute and Bioneers Present
Creating and Implementing National Green Plans: How Countries Are Succeeding
A one-day intensive for professionals in government, business, and civil society seeking to shift U.S. natural resources and climate change policy toward a cohesive strategy at the municipal, county, state and national levels.
JOIN US TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF U.S. GREEN PLANS—comprehensive, integrated environmental strategies successfully used around the world. Hosted by RRI founder, long-time green planning advocate and Green Plans author Huey D. Johnson and featuring global green planning experts on the environmental policies of The Netherlands, New Zealand, and the European Union.
Featuring:
Herman Sips, senior policy advisor at the Dutch Ministry for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment, coordinates international policy and diplomacy on biodiversity and natural resources. Sips launched Dutch exploration of synergies between environmental protection and economic development. An expert on EU environmental policy, he has served as an advisor to the present executive secretary of the UNFCCC.
Hans van Zijst, founder and director of Policy in Context, is a former Dutch diplomat and an architect of The Netherlands Environmental Policy Plan that has propelled the Netherlands toward its goal of total environmental recovery by 2015.
Dr. Tom Fookes, commissioner in the New Zealand Environment Court, associate professor at the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning, helped create New Zealand’s Resource Management Act. This revolutionary policy restructured New Zealand’s natural resources policies around sustainable management.
Martha Delgado, the Minister of the Environment of Mexico City, is a prominent environmental leader in Mexican politics. Her leadership is the result of twenty years of work in organizations dedicated to promoting sustainable development and civic responsibility, including the Confederation of Environmentalist Groups (representing 85 NGOs from across Mexico) and the National Ecology Institute.
Topics include: how Green Plans function, why they are succeeding at managing resources as well as the causes of climate change, and how they can be replicated here in the United States. International experts will document case studies and lead extensive question and answer sessions. A White Paper and a continuing program of outreach to policy makers will follow.

Resource Renewal Institute facilitates the creation, development and implementation of practical strategies to solve the entire environmental problem comprehensively. Founder and president Huey D. Johnson has been a leading advocate of Green Plans since their emergence in the late 1980s. As secretary of resources for the State of California, he conceived and implemented ‘Investing for Prosperity,’ a hundred-year plan for managing the state’s natural resources that achieved lasting gains in forest restoration, salmon recovery, water and wetlands conservation, and renewable energy. Winner of the UN environmental Sasakawa prize and Trust for Public Land founder, Mr. Johnson is currently working to establish green planning in the United States.
Blackstone Ranch Institute supports cross-sector strategic dialogs on a variety of environmental topics that lead to important social innovations in business, government, science and technology, education and community nonprofit work. It played a seminal role in establishing Green Cities California, one of the leading networks of green cities
in North America.
