Designer Kitty

The Ashera is truly an aristocat.

Forget handbags and sunglasses. Designer pets are the new accessory. Lifestyle Pets makes a custom cat, if you're willing to pay the price.

The first hybrid pets were designed to be functional house pets. The qualifications included being shed-free and friendly. Now you can get a kitty that's part leopard.

The price tag is $22,000 plus an additional $1,500 for delivery, which includes a supply of food and toys, access to a pet-behaviorist and a representative to answer questions. The pricey kitty pictured is the Ashera, an exclusive product of Lifestyle Pets. It looks like a little jungle cat and can weigh up to 30 pounds. Simon Brodie, the head of the firm says, "For our customers, price is no object."

One is reminded of the ridiculous luxury of the aristocrats in fantasy and sci-fi novels. I suppose truth is stranger than fiction.
