“Organic, local and fair-made” comes to life in Mara LeGrand’s Heart &
Soil. LeGrand follows the slogan by exploring “organics” in her own
area around Durango, Colorado, extending into northern New Mexico, and
demonstrates one principle of the organic and local movement. She knows
her subject in a way no multinational media producer could. LeGrand’s
interviews belie the old stereotype of organic farmers as naïve hippies
or dreamers ( as well as the even older on of farmers as ignorant
rubes.) The topics range from soil science, husbandry and local ( and
global) climate to finance, education, nutrition and the “dark side” of
agriculture –the corporate extractive system that produces most food
today. It isn’t an academic discussion. These people’s whole lives are
integrated into the natural world that, as farmers, they bend to human
use. They keep at a task they admit is a precarious living because they
love and believe in it. They don’t talk about spirit, but they show a
consciousness of life and place that many spiritual strivers might
envy. Heart & Soil lives up to it’s name." K.M Lancaster
