American Auto Unions & the White Middle Class Liberals

May 18, 2007

I have heard that many foreign cars are made in America. I have also heard that many American cars are built outside the United States. This information is usually communicated to me by a middleclass white man or women as the airtight rationale for buying foreign cars. I have lived near automotive plants of the big 3 US automakers. I had friends that worked at these plants and I purposely purchased vehicle produced there. I like that they made a good living and supported liberal politicians through their money and their actions.

I often find myself in the company of other White American Middleclass Liberals and I have noticed that when I park my car, it is often the only vehicle made by one of the US big 3. There are many Volvos, Toyotas, Hondas, and VWs in the lot. By all accounts these are good vehicles. Some are reliable, get very good gas mileage and some are made with an eye to better environmental practice - all good reasons to purchase a vehicles and certainly their perogative.

How about other considerations for purchasing a vehicle. If all other factors are equal, would you choose to purchase a vehicle made by well paid American union workers?
