Students “Green” Projects Eligible for $2000 in Statewide Competition!

All middle and high schools, as well as student clubs, throughout Georgia are invited to take part in the ninth annual Youth Environmental Symposium (YES), a statewide environmental competition sponsored by the Georgia Conservancy. The goal of YES is to develop knowledgeable, dedicated, and interested students who are more aware of the environment. In the process, students have an opportunity to learn how they can make a difference in maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment in their schools and communities. The deadline for submitting an entry is January 31, 2007.

Ten finalists will be selected to present their projects at YES on Friday, February 23, 2007 at Zoo Atlanta. At the symposium, a panel of judges will determine the winner based on how well the project achieves its goals, whether students understand how their project fits in the overall picture of conservation and environmental protection, and how well they communicate their ideas. The first-place class will receive $2,000 either to enhance the implementation of the project or to purchase materials for the school’s library or science department. Second and third place will win $1000 and $500 respectively. Stipends are available for substitute teachers and transportation to the zoo. Students will receive a t-shirt, lunch, and free admission to the zoo.

Entry forms, YES tips and tricks, as well as the very popular YES 2007 poster are available by emailing Karen Garland at kgarland@gaconservancy.org.

The 2006 Youth Environmental Symposium is funded in part by the Ford Motor Company, Publix Supermarket Charities, and Zoo Atlanta.
