  • Dear Joe,

When we are at peace—which our leaders try to fool us into believing is relative, and is dependent upon military presence—very few people concern themselves with war and what it does to us and to others. It's just too painful and too horrible to contemplate until history and maybe even the war gods and goddesses themselves force our innocent eyes to stare it in the face. Ed Tick from a session at Bioneers 2004

In this issue learn about Ed Tick's redemptive work with veterans, the bravery of CODEPINK, an unshielded account of recent events in the soon to be released book The Best War Ever: Lies, Damned Lies, and the Mess in Iraq, and much more.

    News Flash!

The Santa Cruz County (CA) Supervisors recently voted unanimously to put in place a Precautionary Moratorium on Genetically Engineered (GE) crops. The supervisors followed the recommendation of the Santa Cruz GE Subcommittee, a diverse group of stakeholders, who researched GE for ten months and delivered a 56-page report with 100's of citations.

The subcommittee cited inadequate regulation at the federal and state levels, including a recent audit by USDA inspector general stating that the USDA is not following its own protocols. The audit found that the USDA did not know the location of many of the GE test sites being used. Some GE test crops, including drug-containing crops, remained in the test fields and contaminated subsequent harvests. Some crops not approved for human consumption have found their way into the food supply.

Publication of the Month: The Best War Ever

The Best War Ever: Lies, Damned Lies, and the Mess in Iraq by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber is a vital account of what transpires when a government believes its own deceptions and the news media fails to challenge them. This book is about a conflict that was devised in fantasy and lost in delusion. It highlights the futility of lying to oneself and others in matters of life and death. And it offers lessons to the current generation so that, at least in our time, this never happens again.

As Rampton and Stauber illustrate, the White House seems to have fooled no one as much as itself in the march toward a needless war in Iraq. As the authors argue, one of the most tragic consequences of the Bush administration's reliance on propaganda is its disdain for realistic planning. Repeatedly, when faced with predictions of problems, policymakers dismissed the warnings of Iraq experts, choosing instead to promulgate their own version of the war through conservative media outlets and PR campaigns.

Food and Farming News: Carrot Harvest

Carrot Harvest, Carrot Soup and Rudolf Steiner on Carrots and Children's Nutrition

Excerpts from- Farmer John's Cookbook: The Real Dirt On Vegetables by John Peterson

It's a miracle that we got the carrots out of the ground. The tractor had a flat tire. I got it repaired in town, and returned to the farm and a brooding horizon. Primo and I raced to put the carrot lifter on the tractor. Winds started to blow, the sky went psychedelic, the morning light turned dark like night. I lowered the lifter into the hard clay. The tractor screamed through the wind. The lathe on the lifter sliced under the carrots. Workers converged from all over the farm. They raced down the row, yanking carrots from the ground.
