Organization Summary:
Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) is a non-profit organization
working with Native community-based organizations and Native Nations
throughout North America on environmental and economic justice issues.
IEN has programs supporting frontline Native communities to protect
land, water, air, biodiversity, and community public health. Since
1990, IEN has been one of the leading environmental justice networks
within North America moving forward a Native-based grassroots agenda
on addressing environmental justice and promoting the building of
sustainable communities.
Job Summary:
The Tribal Campus Climate Challenge Organizer will outreach to and
support the implementation of the Campus Climate Challenge (CCC) on
tribal colleges and select non-tribal colleges and universities with
high Native populations in the upper plains and western great lakes
regions (Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan). The CCC is a project of more than 30
leading youth organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada that aims
to leverage the power of young people to organize on college campuses
and high schools to win 100% clean energy policies at their schools.
As a member of the CCC coalition, IEN's goals for the Challenge are:
to reduce global warming pollution as the impacts of climate change
disproportionately impact Indigenous communities; to connect students
to environmental justice and climate justice issues in their
communities; to promote collaboration between students and
communities; and to do this in line with our traditional knowledge and
belief systems. This position requires extensive travel.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Undergo orientation and training on climate justice, petro-politics,
energy policy, tribal-based renewable energy initiatives, and the
history of environmental justice in tribal lands.
Make ongoing updates to and carry out the Tribal Campus Climate
Challenge Organizer work plan to meet the commitments of IEN within
the CCC coalition.
Coordinate meetings with and travel to pre-determined tribal colleges
and universities to meet with and present to appropriate body of
students and faculty as a means to jumpstart the CCC on their campus.
Organize and coordinate issues and skills training for student leaders
of the tribal CCC.
Provide ongoing support to and evaluation of success of tribal CCC
student groups.
Act as IEN liaison to CCC coalition staff: responsible for complying
with CCC coalition reporting requirements, creating positive
relationships between IEN and CCC coalition staff and organizational
partners, and facilitating future involvement of IEN within the CCC
coalition.
Attend regional and national CCC meetings and trainings as determined.
Assist with IEN administrative, development, and communication tasks as needed.
Maintain the web page updates on the project.
Provide monthly, quarterly and end-of-year reports.
Required Qualifications:
College graduate, A.A. required and a B.A. preferred.
At least two years of student, youth, or community-based outreach and
organizing and/or experience working in tribal service-delivery or
community education programs.
Must demonstrate knowledge in environmental, energy and climate
justice work, specifically relating to Indigenous peoples.
Proficiency in advanced functions of Microsoft XP Programs (Word,
Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.) and managing database programs
(Access, Excel and others).
Must demonstrate experience, knowledge, and comfort working with
Indigenous peoples and cultures.
Must demonstrate strong oral, written and computer communication skills
Must demonstrate abilities as a good listener, self-starter, and both
a team and independent worker.
Ability to work well under pressure and juggle multiple time-sensitive tasks.
Willingness to travel most of the year
Willingness to work flexible hours including night and weekend work and travel.
Must have valid driver license, a reliable vehicle, and valid car insurance.
Must be drug and alcohol free.
Must be able to work immediately and relocate to IEN main office in
Bemidji, MN as soon as possible.
