In the words of Pope Francis, “The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change.” Climate change is impacting us right now; the time has come for humanity to come together and demand action. Due to increased concentrations of greenhouse gas emissions, communities across the globe are feeling the catastrophic effects of drought, heat, wildfires, and rising sea levels. It’s time that we stand up for our Earth. I want my voice to be heard on climate action, and you should too!
For the past few months, I have been working as the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Student Leader for Know Tomorrow. Know Tomorrow is a student-led campaign highlighting the voices of Millennials on the issue of climate change. The campaign culminates in a nationwide Day of Climate Action on Friday, October 2nd.
We Demand Action
Our goal is to send a message that’s loud and clear, signifying our demand for action prior to the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris this November 20th through December 11th! Campuses across the country are participating in this campaign and at UCI, we are showcasing artists who use their creative voice to illustrate climate action and sustainability.
Following the Know Tomorrow Day Of Action, a UCI student delegation will converge at Bioneers on October 16-18 to connect with other change makers who are determined to not only raise awareness about climate change, but to also implement creative solutions. For the last 26 years, Bioneers has provided a space for artists, scientists, activists, and students to come together and collectively respond to the current crisis and infuse hope in the hearts of all. Along with other UCI student leaders, I am thrilled to join the youth who will be taking part in the transformative experiences that Bioneers has to offer, and together disrupt the status quo.
We are particularly excited to join forces with other youth leaders like the 2015 Brower Youth Award Winners that will be speaking at the Youth Tent at the 2015 Bioneers Conference. Every year, Earth Island Institute recognizes 6 incredible young activists from North America that come from all walks of life and have a deep commitment to protect our planet and its inhabitants. The Brower Youth Award Winners will be speaking at Bioneers on Friday, October 16th at 2:45pm. Among other things, they will be sharing their stories about how they got their academic institutions to divest from fossil fuels, and how they have been tirelessly advocating for introducing green spaces in urban areas.
Furthermore, they will be providing us with opportunities on how we can all plug into the movement to advance climate justice and take action together!
This is a universal issue, and we must use our voices to generate change. As a choreographer and dancer, I believe that art has the power to touch people on a deeply emotional level. I aspire to illuminate the arts as a transformative tool of climate communication. As choreographer Karole Armitage stated, “Art is often a portrait of being alive in your time. Climate change is part of our time.”
Will You Join Us in the Call for Climate Action?
Let’s stand up together, be alive in our time, and create a compassionate community around climate action. People from across the globe are stepping up to demand change, will you join us?
