The world is a dimmer place today without the light of our brother warrior John Trudell.
John first came to Bioneers in the early 2000s and returned many times to shine his light, speak and perform. John’s fierce and fearless leadership on behalf of Indigenous Peoples – and all life – showed exceptional courage and vision, even in the face of terrible personal loss and violence. He was forged in fury with the early struggles of the American Indian Movement. His art glowed like an ember in his songs and music, reaching millions. His spirit was unstoppable and nothing could turn him around.
We deeply mourn the loss of John, and offer our heartfelt condolences and love to his many friends and relations. We are so grateful to have known John and to have him be such a presence in the Bioneers community, which he loved. We send all good wishes for your journey, John, and we will always love you and remember you.
Listen to John Trudell on Bioneers Radio
You can hear more from John in this episode of our radio show, “Becoming Fully Human: The Covenant of the Original Instructions,” where he is featured along with Indigenous leaders Winona LaDuke and Evon Peter.
The Original Instructions represent the ancient empirical wisdom of traditional ecological knowledge earned over generations and millennia by people living closely with the land and each other. They also comprise disarmingly simple counsel: be thankful, enjoy life and attend to the inner pollution that results in outer pollution. Indigenous leaders Winona LaDuke, John Trudell and Evon Peter voice these ancient instructions, which hold the keys to our survival as a species in the historic transition to a truly sustainable world.
