The cornerstone of sustainability is behavior change. A sustainable future requires individuals and businesses to act (e.g., reduce waste, water and energy efficiency, and prevent pollution). To date, most programs have relied on disseminating information. Research demonstrates, however, that simply providing information has little or no effect on what people or businesses do. But if not ads, brochures or booklets, then what? Over the last several years, a new approach, Community-Based Social Marketing, has emerged as an effective alternative for delivering sustainable behavior. The CU Environmental Center is hosting a full-day workshop with respected world expert and environmental psychologist, Doug McKenzie-Mohr. The workshop will introduce CBSM and provide participants with the knowledge they need to deliver the most effective programs.

Students “Green” Projects Eligible for $2000 in Statewide Competition! All middle and high schools, as well as student clubs, throughout Georgia are invited to take part in the ninth annual Youth Environmental Symposium (YES), a statewide environmental competition sponsored by the Georgia Conservancy. The goal of YES is to develop knowledgeable, dedicated, and interested students who are more aware of the environment. In the process, students have an opportunity to learn how they can make a difference in maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment in their schools and communities. Each spring, the Headlands Institute hosts a weekend-long environmental youth conference in the Marin Headlands, just north of San Francisco. High school students from all over the Bay Area come to the coast to participate in and lead workshops about current environmental issues that are affecting their communities. Youth Quest participants also help out the Marin Headlands environment as well by pitching in and helping out with stewardship projects around the park.
