It was encouraging to see the solid Rolling Stone story on “The Pentagon & Climate Change: How Deniers Put National Security at Risk.”
It lays out the realpolitik of how so-called “conservatives” in Congress are severely harming national (and global) security by hampering the Pentagon’s serious efforts to address climate disruption as the top global security threat that it is.
Climate Disruption and National Security at Bioneers
We’ve been covering this territory at Bioneers for quite a while, and we highly recommend our radio show “Security by Design: Environmental Security is Homeland Security” that is a brilliant overview of the strategic terrain with Amory Lovins and David W. Orr.
The real “conservative” agenda is to conserve the fossil fuel industrial complex. The authentically conservative priority is to conserve the planet and climate on which all life depends, not to mention human civilization as we know it.
The Pentagon: A Tree Hugger?
In reality, the Pentagon has been paying scrupulous attention to climate threats for decades. The military has to be reality-based—it’s charged with operationalizing the security of the country. And it’s way out in front of the rest of the nation on clean energy, zero waste, getting off oil, and spawning tomorrow’s clean technologies and industries.
The heat is on—2014 was the hottest year on record since record keeping began and global weirding is kicking in everywhere.
Are right-wing conservative military hawks starting to find themselves in the awkward position of calling the Pentagon a tree hugger? And how will their base react as climate disruption continues to wreak havoc on the ground? A big climate denier backlash is inevitable—with pitchforks.
