  • Greetings!

Alexander Von Humboldt, German geographer and naturalist, said that Nature is a unity in diversity. We would not have an active Earth, including the history of the human race, if Von Humboldt's observation was not true. Nature, beyond the human race, continues to exist with this understanding of the power of the diverse despite the man-made pressures we have subjected her to. Diversity is in essence nature, whether we talk about a mangrove forest or the makeup of a society. Recognizing diversity is about more than just tolerance. It is about valuing a person's individuality as well as their role in the greater ecology of life.

In this issue of the Buzz, Carl Anthony invokes a new story about race and class in our cities, Rachel Remen's book My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge and Belonging reminds us of the power of selflessness, Michael Pollan shares provocative ideas on local food production, and much more.

Since the 1990's we've made great progress in bringing awareness of ecological issues to many of our communities. Spotlight Resource: The Ruckus Society

The Ruckus Society sees itself as a toolbox of experience, training, and skills. They provide instruction on the application of tactical and strategic tools to a growing number of organizations and individuals from around the world in skill shares and trainings that are designed to move a campaign forward. They undertake this work in strong collaboration with partner organizations, working together to define and create the training agenda.

In order to effectively meet the challenges of stopping the war in Iraq, thwarting climate change catastrophes, reclaiming the commons from corporations, conquering our addiction to oil, and protecting human rights, now, more than ever, environmental and social justice organizers must develop winning strategies that are creative, nonviolent, and take their lead from impacted communities.
