Annie Leonard On Cap and Trade

By Spencer Windes on Dec 02, 2009 |

The queen of the viral enviro video speaks out on why she thinks Cap and Trade is a bad deal.

There's been a big back-and-forth amongst defenders of the environment as to whether the carbon cap and trade framework, like that in the climate bill that recently passed the House of Representatives, really means progress. 2009 Bioneers speaker Annie Leonard lays out the case of why she thinks not in her new video. Check it out, and see Annie's speech from the conference. Here's a trailer for the video:

Magician's Approach Will Fail

Avatar Posted by Tim Foresman at Dec 04, 2009 02:56 PM
Cap and Trade is like the magician's use of hand tricks. "See my polluting business here, but trust me on the off sets I have in a third world nations. Go ahead and trust me." Well folks, as the former chief environmental scientist for the UN, I'm telling you there is no way for us to verify the offsets around the world, especially on land that is of questionable ownership. Forested land where the local people are not even recognized for their stake in stewardship. Tax carbon and let pollutors pay now, not later.

Justified Pollution?

I agree with Tim. The whole concept of "offsetting" is a strange one to me. It sends the wrong message to big polluting corporations, is harmful to the Earth and destroys the locals on so many levels. Who thought of this idea anyways (no need for an answer to that)?!?! Really, cap and trade, for me, sounds like an attempt at justified pollution--that's never really justified. Just because a company has lots of money to "offset" their bad behavior doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Can you imagine if this business model were allowed amongst our children? Parents and teachers would have a fit!
