Did you know that you can give gifts of stock to Bioneers? Not only are you supporting the shaping of a brighter future for the planet, there are other great benefits to you as well.
Minimize Capital Gains—and Your Taxes
One major way in which donating stock can benefit you is by lessening the burden of capital gains. Every year, when it’s time to pay taxes, you owe the government a certain percent of the earnings from your stocks, commonly known as capital gains. When you donate stock, you no longer owe any capital gains on your earnings for that stock that year. The organization you donate the stock to would not have to pay that acquired capital gain tax either It’s a win-win situation. In the case that your stock gains value, it is better to give the non-profit the stock than it would be to sell the stock and then give the non-profit your earnings, since you would have to subtract out the capital gains you will owe at the end of the year., giving money to the government that could instead go straight to supporting the mission of the organization you’re supporting.
Stock Donations Are Simple
Additionally, donating stocks is simple, as the value of the donation comes from the average price of the stock on the day you transfer it to the non-profit – no appraisal needed. Your broker simply accepts your request to transfer the stock of your choice into our account, and our broker will then sell it, converting your old stock holdings into financial power for Bioneers.
Clean the Soul of Your Stock Portfolio
Finally, giving the gift of stock can help you divest from “tainted” stock that you may have acquired through inheritance or before a corporation was a known bad actor.
As Branden Barber, our Director of Engagement and Development, says, giving gifts of stock is the opportunity to “clean the soul of your stock portfolio.”
What he means is that you can take stocks that you are less than thrilled to have on your hands – say Exxon or Chevron or any of many corporations harming the earth and our future – and you can actually use them to support a good cause.
When you transfer this “dirty” stock to Bioneers (which we will sell right away), you are in a sense cleaning your own karma – you are no longer profiting from something, nor associating with a corporation that you would otherwise not support.
You are making a commitment to create the world the world wants through right action. Think of it as “personal divestment” for a great cause.
What Inspires Your Giving?
Susan Prince, a baby boomer who inherited stock through her family, points out that for a while she didn’t even think to examine the stock portfolio passed down to her, and was unaware that she could donate stocks to her non-profit of choice.
With further investigation, she discovered that some of the companies whose stock she held were corporations she would never choose to support – in any way.
When she learned that she could clean her portfolio and benefit her favorite charitable organizations at the same time, she was elated. Her reason to donate stock to Bioneers? “Inspiration.” Our 2014 conference demonstrated to her that even though our society’s current way of living is destroying people and planet, there is hope in the actions that people are taking to change this.
"Last year’s Bioneers Conference was incredibly inspirational – like a sweet spring breeze after a cold and gloomy winter. I am still acting on the renewed energy that I received there. Yes, we can make a difference!”
